UN Chief warns of growing tensions in Red Sea, Lebanon

NEW YORK, Jan. 16 (YPA) – The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, warned on Tuesday that tensions had reached sky high in the Red Sea and beyond.

Guterres told the press accredited to the United Nations, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Israeli aggression on Gaza, that “playing with fire in the Red Sea and in Lebanon may soon be impossible to contain.”

He expressed his deep concern about the news coming from the Red Sea and Lebanon, respectively.

“I have serious concerns about the daily exchange of fire across the Blue Line,” Guterres said.

He also warned that these actions threaten to provoke a broader escalation between Israel and Lebanon and have a profound impact on regional stability.

Guterres pointed out that tens of thousands of people have been displaced in northern Israel and southern Lebanon due to fighting, and the possibility of humanitarian aid reaching Lebanon is still restricted.

“We cannot see in Lebanon what we see in Gaza, and we cannot allow what is happening in Gaza to continue,” he said.
