Libya: Victims of Storm Daniel in Derna exceeds 2,000
WORLD, Sept 11 (YPA) – Ossama Hamad, the prime minister of the Libyan parliament-backed government, has said that the number of victims of the storm “Daniel” in Derna exceeds 2,000, while the missing people are in the thousands.
He declared Derna a disaster zone after heavy rainfall and floods destroyed much of the city.
Derna’s Municipal Council said it “lost control” of the disastrous situation in the city, and appealed for “an international intervention.”
The council called for opening a sea corridor with the city after most land roads collapsed.
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) is ready to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to complement national and local efforts in response to the deadly storm that killed 150 people in eastern Libya.
“We express our heartfelt condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives and our thoughts for all people affected,” UNSMIL said in a statement today.

Footage posted by locals on social media showed extreme flooding in the city as the heavy rainstorm increased the water levels of the city’s waterfalls. Other images showed parts of the roads to the city collapsed by the floods.
