Denmark to ban Holy Quran burnings

WORLD, Aug 25 (YPA) – The Danish government proposed a law banning the burning of copies of the Quran following a recent wave of protests among Muslims.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Denmark’s justice minister Peter Hummelgaard said in a press conference on Friday that the government plans to ban the Holy Quran burnings.

“The bill will make it punishable, for example, to burn the Quran or the Bible in public. It will only aim at actions in a public place or with the intention of spreading in a wider circle,” Hummelgaard said. He said such acts would be punishable by fines or up to two years in prison.

The Danish minister described the recent burning of copies of the Quran as “senseless taunts” aimed to incite “discord and hatred”.

“When individuals protest and burn copies of the Quran in the way we have seen recently, these acts were a “fundamentally contemptuous and unsympathetic”, he said, adding  these acts harm Denmark and its interests”
