Demonstrators burn Swedish flag in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, July 23 (YPA) – Demonstrators burned the Swedish flag during a protest in Baghdad on Saturday, against the desecration of the Quran and the Iraqi flag in Stockholm.

Hundreds of demonstrators tried to storm Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone, which houses foreign embassies and the seat of the Iraqi government, after reports of a Quran burning incident carried out by an extremist nationalist group outside the Iraqi embassy in Copenhagen.

The protest came two days after people angry stormed the Swedish embassy in Baghdad.

An Iraqi asylum seeker who burned a copy of the Quran during last month’s demonstration in Stockholm threatened to do the same again on Thursday, but eventually refrained from burning it.
