US to transfer $500 million in arms as aid for Taiwan

WORLD, May 07 (YPA) – The United States plans to send $500 million worth of weapons to Taiwan, according to the same emergency scheme used to help Ukraine militarily, Bloomberg reported, citing sources.

“The Biden administration is preparing a $500 million arms package to be sent to Taiwan, using fast-track financing mechanisms, such as the supply of weapons to Ukraine,” the agency said.

The aid package to Taiwan involves sending weapons and support equipment from US stockpiles, using the Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA).

This drawdown, which authorizes the President to transfer articles and services from US stockpiles without congressional approval during an emergency.

China considers Taiwan’s island of 23 million people an integral part of its territory and does not rule out retaking it by force if necessary.
