WORLD, March. 01 (YPA) – Ruling party candidate Bola Tinubu was declared winner of Nigeria’s presidential election, according to final official results released early Wednesday.
Tinubu received 37% of the vote, or nearly 8.8 million, while main opposition candidate Abubakar won 29% with almost 7 million. Third-place finisher Obi took 25% with about 6.1 million, according to the results announced on live television by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
In addition to leading nationally, Tinubu also garnered more than 25% of the vote in at least two-thirds of the country’s states (24 out of at least 36) plus the Abuja metropolitan area, a prerequisite for his presidency.
The two main opposition parties had pre-empted the results by calling on Tuesday for the election to be cancelled, arguing that the manipulation of the results led to a vote that was not free, fair or transparent.
