Iraqi Foreign Minister meets with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres

BAGHDAD, March 01 (YPA) – Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein received on Wednesday United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at Baghdad International Airport, who arrived in Iraq for the first visit in 6 years.

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry published photos from the meeting, which brought the two sides together.

Upon his arrival in the Iraqi capital, the Secretary-General said he wanted to demonstrate “solidarity with the people and the democratic institutions of Iraq and a solidarity that means that the United Nations is totally committed to support the consolidation of the institutions in this country”.

He said he also wanted to express his “confidence that Iraqis will be able to overcome the difficulties and challenges they still face through an open and inclusive dialogue”.

Guterres’ last visit to Iraq dates back to spring 2017.

From Iraq, the Secretary-General will travel to Qatar to participate in the Summit of the Least Developed Countries.
