UN Security Council to discuss on Thursday developments in Yemen

NEW YORK, Sept. 08 (YPA) – The UN Security Council will hold on Thursday a special session on the developments in Yemen.

It is expected that the consultation session will discuss the military, humanitarian and economic conditions, and the level of commitment to the armistice during the extension period.

The UN envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, will submit his briefing to the Council, which is expected to include the results of his last meeting with the Joint Military Committee, as well as the results of his visit to Riyadh, Tehran and Muscat, and what he achieved regarding his proposals that were presented to the parties regarding the extension of the armistice and its extension to 6 months.

This session comes amid an unjustified escalation by the Saudi-led coalition, which, during the last truce, fabricated a major crisis to double the suffering of the Yemeni people by seizing fuel ships and preventing them from reaching the port of Hodeida, despite the armistice agreement signed under the auspices of the United Nations.

Observers expect that the briefing of the UN envoy will not go far from previous briefings, in which Grundberg overlooked the coalition’s breaches, whether with regard to the ceasefire, or in doubling the siege, which confirms day after day that the United Nations is on the wrong side in addressing Yemeni issues.

In the context, the former Yemeni Foreign Minister, Abu Bakr al-Qirbi, warned against the political solution sponsors’ ignoring of the escalation, which made the truce just “a warrior’s rest.”

Al-Qirbi pointed out, in a Tweet on Twitter, that the role of the UN envoy contributed to transforming the armistice “into a mere goal in itself rather than a means to end the war, which will prolong Yemen’s suffering and end the hope of a political solution.”
