GENEVA, Jun. 16 (YPA) – The World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday announced a decrease in the number of new infections with the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) around the world.
“Euronews” news website quoted the Secretary-General of the Organization, Tedros Ghebreyesus, during a press conference held in the Swiss city of Geneva, as saying that the world “is witnessing a decline in the number of new cases of corona for the seventh week.”
He explained that this is “the longest period of decline in infections since the start of the pandemic about a year and a half ago.”
Ghebreyesus expressed his satisfaction with the general decrease in the number of new infections with the virus, noting that deaths in general “did not decline at the same speed and decreased only slightly last week” compared to the number of infections.
In the same context, Ghebreyesus pointed out that “the virus is transmitted faster than the distribution of vaccines globally,” calling on political leaders to commit to immunizing at least 70 percent of the world’s population before the meeting of the leaders of the G7 next year.
As of this evening, the number of people infected with corona globally has exceeded 177 million, while more than 3,800,000 others have died due to the virus, according to the “World Meter” website.
