Cuba: Demonstration denounces US blockade, Secretary of State describes it as genocide

SANAA, March 29 (YPA) – Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez affirmed that the US blockade imposed on his country blatantly violates international law, and represents “genocide” of Cuba.

“The blockade is not criminal, illegal, immoral, and blatantly violates international law during the epidemic crisis, but rather an act of genocide,” Rodriguez said during a demonstration in Havana calling for an end to the blockade imposed by the American side on the island since 1962.

Hundreds of Cubans demonstrated in their cars and bikes on Havana’s promenade overlooking the sea, calling for the blockade to be lifted.

The demonstrators roamed a distance of about 7 kilometers amid the roar of trumpets and chants, along the Corniche Malecon, adjacent to the sea in the Cuban capital, which is usually crowded with foreign tourists, fishermen and pedestrians, but it is currently deserted due to the outbreak of the Corona virus.

“This blockade is inhuman and I think similar campaigns have taken place in different countries,” Anna Fidelia Cuero, former world champion and two Olympic medals in the 800-meter race, told AFP. We, as Cubans, have a duty to support this campaign against the ban. ”

It is noteworthy that in the last days of his term, the Trump administration tightened sanctions on Cuba, and the individual measures taken by Washington against Havana reached 244 measures, including returning Cuba to the list of “states sponsoring terrorism.”

Cuba and the United States are two neighbors in geography, divergent in politics and ideology, despite US President Joe Biden declaring during his election campaign his desire to change his country’s approach to Cuba, and to follow Obama’s approach towards it.

Also, some American political elites urged President Biden to pursue a different approach than his predecessor Trump towards Cuba, by adopting a policy of openness to it.
