Saudi Arabia broadcasts 2.2 million tweets offensive to Qatar on Twitter

WASHINGTON, Oct. 10 (YPA) – The Stanford Internet Observatory, which specializes in internet research, said that it had detected more than two million “false and misleading” tweets on Twitter linked to the Saudi government and directed against the Qatari government.

This came after Twitter announced, on Thursday, the closure of hundreds of accounts included in five networks linked to the governments of Saudi Arabia, Cuba, Thailand and Russia.

The majority of the misleading Saudi tweets were related to about 33 fake accounts, noting that the number of tweets reached 2.2 million, the Observatory explained.

According to the Stanford Observatory, These accounts were created to impersonate prominent Qatari political figures, and to provide narratives about Qatari politics that are geostrategically favorable to the Saudi authorities.

The Observatory described the Saudi operation on “Twitter” as “rude,” and said that the fake accounts were focusing on spreading misleading information against Qatar, noting that one of the accounts had more than a million followers. “The Saudi government accounts were spreading many rumors against Qatar.”

The Observatory revealed that the Saudi government had published fabricated statements by “Amnesty International” and “Human Rights Watch” on “Twitter”.
