Update: Victims of Indian plane crash rise to 18 dead, 100 wounded

KERALA, Aug. 8 (YPA) – At least 18 people were killed and 100 others were injured, including 15 seriously, as a plane belonging to an Air India airline crashed on Friday as it landed in Calicut city, southern India, according to an Indian police official.

“At least 15 passengers are in critical condition, and the situation is evolving, and we fear that the death toll will rise,” Abdulkarim, a local police official, told AFP Saturday.

He added: “The rescue operation is over and we are collecting and sorting luggage and valuables of the people around the airport runway.”

An official in the emergency management said that fuel leaked from the plane, but a miracle happened and the fire did not break out, adding, “If that had happened, the death toll would have been much greater.”

According to the airline company, the Boeing 737 plane was carrying 191 people, including crew members, coming from Dubai to Kozhikode in the southern Indian state of Kerala.
