46 prisoners killed, 50 injured in riots in prison in Venezuela
SANAA, May 3 (YPA) – Riots in a prison in the state of Portujesa, western Venezuela, killed at least 46 people and injured 60 others.
“The dead bodies of 46 have been identified after Friday’s incident in Los Llanos Correctional Center,” the director of the Prison Observatory of Venezuela, Beatrice Jerón, who is defending the rights of prisoners, was quoted as saying by Reuters.
For her part, opposition MP Maria Beatrice Martinez said that the violence occurred after the banning of meals, which relatives of inmates usually bring in visits.
The authorities imposed restrictions on visits as part of efforts to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus in overcrowded prisons inside the country.
It is reported that prisons in Venezuela have high levels of violence and poor conditions.
