UN: 168 million people will need emergency aid in 2020

SANAA, Dec. 5 (YPA) – In over 53 countries  around the world people will need help and protection in 2020, costing $29 billion, the United Nations said Wednesday.

In a report entitled ” Global Humanitarian Overview “, the United Nations estimated that 168 million people would need emergency assistance next year in the world.

“In 2020, nearly 168 million people worldwide will need humanitarian assistance and protection,” Mark Lowcock told journalists in Geneva, at the launch of the UN humanitarian affairs coordination office’s (OCHA) Global Humanitarian Overview, according to AFP.

Yemen and Syria remain at the top of the world’s humanitarian crisis list, where about 80% of the population (about 24 million people) need aid in Yemen alone, he said.

The United Nations would seek to help 109 million people and non-governmental organizations to provide assistance to the rest of those in need.

According to the Lowcock , eight of the world’s largest food shortage crises have been exacerbated by factors such as armed conflict and climate change, as well as a slowdown in the global economy, leaving more countries vulnerable to humanitarian crises.
