WHO: Quarter of million Yemenis on brink of starvation
SANAA, Oct. 27 (YPA) – A quarter of a million Yemenis are on the brink of starvation from a war that has devastated the country’s infrastructure, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Sunday.
The ongoing conflict and the resulting economic crisis are key factors behind food insecurity in Yemen, WHO said in a report published on its website.
“The conflict has destroyed vital civilian infrastructure in the country,” the report said.
According to the report, an estimated 20 million people are food insecure in Yemen and nearly a quarter of a million people are on the verge of starvation if there is no urgent intervention.
The report noted that the system would set priorities and closely monitor communities at high risk of famine.
Yemen has witnessed aggression against the coalition countries led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates for five years, which caused a major disaster at the level of the entire Yemeni provinces.
