Washington sends troops to control oil fields in northern Syria
SANAA, Oct. 25 (YPA) – Washington announced on Thursday that it planned to strengthen its military presence in northeastern Syria to protect its oil fields, according to Agence France Presse.
“One of the most important gains the United States has made with our war partners is the control of the oil fields in eastern Syria,” a Pentagon official said in a statement.
“The United States is committed to strengthening our position in northeastern Syria in coordination with our SDF partners, by sending additional military support to prevent oil fields there allegedly to protect them from ISIS or other destabilizing actors, ” the unnamed Pentagon official said.
This comes at a time when the Kurdish forces, backed by the United States, withdrew from border posts with several Turkey in northeastern Syria, pursuant to an agreement between Moscow and Ankara, which enabled them to impose their control with Damascus on areas belonging to the Kurds.
US forces withdrew earlier this month from the border areas in a move seen as a departure from the Kurds, but return to protect oil fields after the Russian-Turkish agreement.
