UN condemns assassination of ICRC staff member in Yemen
SANAA, April 22 (YPA) – United Nations strongly condemned the assassination of a staff member of the International Commission of Red Cross (ICRC) in Taiz province.
In a statement obtained by Yemen Press Agency, humanitarian coordinator for Yemen, Lise Grande, condemned this abhorrent and unjustified shooting.
“Humanitarian staff are working around the clock to provide food, medical care, shelter, water and life-saving materials to the millions of people affected by this devastating conflict,” Lise said.
“We can not do what we should if we do not feel secure,” she added.
Lise said that the parties of the conflict are obliged under international humanitarian law to do everything possible to protect civilians and ensure that they receive the assistance which they need, stressing on the need for the parties to commit themselves to protect the people who are working to provide assistance.
The humanitarian coordinator in Yemen expressed her condolences to the ICRC family and all the staff of the Committee.
