SANAA, Feb. 11 (YPA) – The U.S. may begin withdrawing its ground troops from Syria within weeks, Commander of the U.S. Central Command General Joseph Votel said.
According to Reuters, “all this is determined by the situation on the ground, he added
Joseph Votel who oversees US forces in the Middle East, warned that the exact timing of the withdrawal depended on the situation in Syria, where United States-backed fighters launched a final attack against ISIS-controlled enclaves near the Iraqi border.
“With regard to withdrawal, “I think we’re on the right track,” he said that “transferring people is easier than transferring gear, so what we’re trying to do now is to re-evaluate these materials, which we don’t need,” he told reporters during his Middle East tour.
The sudden Trump announcement last December pulled US troops out of Syria lead to the resignation of Defense Secretary James Mathis, who did not agree with Trump in the move.
