SANAA, Jan. 14 (YPA) – A displaced Syrian woman in Rikban camp set herself and her children on fire on Sunday.
The spokesman for the Civil Administration in the camp, Khalid al-Ali, told the German news agency that “Sundus Fathallah, 28, attempted to burn herself and her children with fire because of the lack of food supplies at the camp, and her neighbors extinguished the fire and drove the woman and her children out of the burned-out tent. They were taken to the medical point and to the hospitals in the Kingdom of Jordan .
“Over 40,000 people are suffering from extreme cold due to the lack of trees in this desert area to use for heating and their inability to purchase oil materials,” al-Ali said.
He pointed to the high prices of food and vegetables several times higher than the price in the areas controlled by the Syrian government, amid a complete absence of humanitarian organizations that provide assistance to residents of the Rikban camp.
The Public Relations and Policy Agency in the Rikban camp blamed the international and humanitarian organizations for “failing to carry out their humanitarian duties”.
Rikban camp is located in south-eastern Syria near the Syrian-Jordanian border, about 13 km from the American base of Al-Tenf and a number of armed factions.
More than 20 people died last year because of the lack of medical services and the inability to leave the camp and go to hospitals, whether inside Syria or Jordan.
