Yemeni detainees in UAE-runs “Bir Ahmed” prison continue their hunger strike

ADEN, Jan. 7 (YPA) – Scores of Yemeni detainees in Bir Ahmed prison, which is run by the United Arab Emirates in the southern port city of Aden, are greatly suffering due to practices of the UAE-backed security belt forces against them.

Fifteen days ago, the prisoners launched an open hunger strike in order to protest the situation they were living in.

As a result, a few days ago, a number of dead bodies were found in the Aden free zone.

These bodies are believed to of detainees who had died of starvation due to the strike, according to southern Yemeni activists.

According to the testimonies of the abducted mothers, this is not the first time that their detained sons have announced a hunger strike. Many of them were confined to the prison cells, and the UAE-controlled public prosecutor’s office is still stalling for their release, according to Al-Jazeera.

The name of the infamous prison Bir Ahmed is linked to enforced disappearances and torture committed by mercenaries and the UAE-backed Security Belt militia, according to international reports.

People in the southern region of Yemen accused the exiled Hadi regime of failing to take any legal action to help those who have been abducted and detained.

According to human rights activists, the Bir Ahmed detention centre in Aden has become one of the headlines of the violation of Yemeni sovereignty, as the establishment, administration and supervision of prisons is considered to be a sovereign right of the Yemeni state.
