UN warns of famine may affect 14 million people in Yemen

SANAA, Oct. 23 (YPA) – The United Nations warned of the worsening humanitarian situation in Yemen,  noting that 14 million people may become on the brink of starvation in the coming months if the situation continues the same.

UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Mark Lowcock, said in an internal note delivered to the 15-member of Security Council, the humanitarian situation in Yemen is the worst in the world where 75 per cent of the population, equivalent to 22 million people, is in need of assistance and protection, including 4.8 million in the case of serious food insecurity and dire need for food. This number could increase by 6.5 million, 14 million.

“The largest humanitarian operation is currently being conducted in Yemen, with more than 200 partners providing assistance through an international humanitarian plan,” Lowcock said, adding that continued generous donations are essential to tackle the crisis, as well as to maintain import movement and even increase it across all ports.
