Sanaa condemns Saudi attack on Mayyun Island lighthouse

SANAA, Oct. 24 (YPA) – The Interior Ministry in Sanaa has condemned a Saudi strike on the historic Bab al-Mandab Lighthouse on Mayyun Island, urging international maritime organizations to act against threats to navigation.

In a statement, the ministry described the strike as an attack on a vital civilian facility, warning that it threatens maritime safety in one of the world’s most important shipping corridors.

It said that the lighthouse, which is over 170 years old and maintained by the Coast Guard Authority, guides ships, particularly at night. Targeting it, the ministry added, endangers vessels, seafarers and international trade through the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

The ministry called on international maritime bodies to condemn the attack, protect civilian navigation facilities and take practical measures to prevent similar incidents.

It also stressed that Saudi Arabia, with US backing, is seeking to militarize the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait, warning that this threatens Yemen’s sovereignty, regional security and global trade.

The ministry cautioned that attacks on maritime facilities and increased military activity around strategic waterways could endanger ships and crews, disrupt supply routes and affect the global economy.

It concluded that maritime security requires respect for Yemen’s sovereignty over its islands, ports and borders, alongside compliance with international maritime laws and conventions.
