Sanaa’s National Commission for Human Rights condemns Saudi airstrikes in Maqbanah, Taiz

SANAA, Oct. 17 (YPA) – The National Commission for Human Rights in Sanaa and its branch in Taiz Governorate condemned the airstrikes conducted by the Saudi-led coalition warplanes, which targeted civilian homes with four raids in the Himyar al-Jabal sub-district of Maqbanah District.

The preliminary death toll stands at nine civilians, including women and children, with 16 others sustaining varying injuries.

In a statement, the Commission reported that several citizens remain trapped under the rubble amid extreme rescue difficulties resulting from the massive destruction.

The Commission described the deliberate and systematic targeting of densely populated residential neighborhoods as a war crime and a crime against humanity under international humanitarian law and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (specifically Article 8(2)(b)(i) and (ii)), as well as a violation of international norms and charters.

The statement noted that executing four successive strikes on the residential site reveals the Saudi regime’s intent to inflict the maximum number of casualties, holding it fully and directly responsible for the massacre.

Holding the international community, the United Nations, and the Security Council morally and legally responsible for the ongoing crimes amid their silence, the Commission called upon the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and UNICEF to condemn the targeting of women and children in Maqbanah, and urged local and international human rights organizations to denounce the crime.

The National Commission for Human Rights and its Taiz branch renewed their demands to prosecute the leaders of the Saudi regime before the International Criminal Court as war criminals.
