Sanitation workers’ strike in Aden threatens imminent health, environmental disaster
ADEN, Sept. 28 (YPA) – Workers and employees of the Cleaning and Improvement Fund in Aden Governorate, which is under Saudi control, launched a full-scale strike across all districts on Monday
The move brought waste collection operations to a complete halt and caused garbage to accumulate in public streets and neighborhoods amid growing warnings of an impending health and environmental crisis threatening residents.
The industrial action comes in response to what workers’ representatives described as “continued disregard” by the Saudi-backed governor and the fund’s director regarding their living and employment demands, as well as the closure of dialogue channels despite previous memos and statements addressed to relevant authorities.
Striking workers emphasized that the decision to suspend operations was a last resort after exhausting all administrative reviews. They reaffirmed that the strike will continue until all their legitimate demands are fully and effectively met without further delay, primarily:
- Improving living and employment conditions.
- Disbursing overdue financial entitlements.
- Paying out insurance benefits from the fund’s revenues.
The resulting accumulation of waste has sparked widespread public discontent among residents, alongside escalating fears of worsening health conditions and the potential spread of infectious diseases in a city already suffering from severe deterioration in basic public services and living standards.
