Italy relocates aircraft from Saudi Taif Base after reported attack

ROME, Sept. 22 (YPA) – Italy has secretly and swiftly relocated some military aircraft from Saudi Arabia’s Taif Air Base over security concerns in the region, Italian newspaper “La Repubblica” reported, citing senior government sources.

The newspaper said the move followed an attack from Yemen that damaged one of four Italian Eurofighter jets stationed at Taif Air Base.

It reported that two C-130J transport aircraft were among the first relocated due to heightened risk.

Although some aircraft have been moved, hundreds of Italian troops remain at Taif as Rome considers withdrawing some personnel.

The Italian government and intelligence services are currently assessing the security situation before deciding whether to withdraw part of the force.

La Repubblica also reported that the Yemeni side sent a message to Rome, saying there was no state of war with Italy and no intention of involving it in the conflict.

It also questioned the reasons behind the presence of Italian military aircraft in Saudi Arabia.
