Oman, Iran agree on temporary maritime corridor, mine-clearing in Strait of Hormuz

TEHRAN, Aug. 27 (YPA) – The Sultanate of Oman and Iran on Wednesday agreed on a joint framework establishing a temporary shared maritime corridor through the Strait of Hormuz, alongside an agreement to implement a joint mine-clearing project as an initial phase to secure naval traffic and mitigate recent regional conflict impacts.

The agreement followed consultations in Tehran between Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al-Busaidi and Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi regarding conditions in the Strait of Hormuz and safe navigation resumption, respecting both nations’ sovereignty.

Both sides agreed to continue technical negotiations for a permanent corridor and future strait management, alongside activating a navigation traffic information-exchange mechanism and providing maritime and security services.

A joint statement emphasized comprehensive talks with Gulf-coastal states, adhering to international law and respecting coastal states’ sovereign rights to secure international shipping and energy supplies.
