Two consecutive earthquakes strike Al-Madaribah, Ras Al-Arah in Yemen’s Lahj

DHAMAR, Aug. 24 (YPA) – The Seismological and Volcanological Observatory Center in Dhamar reported on Monday two consecutive tremors striking the coastal district of Al-Madaribah and Ras Al-Arah in southwestern Yemen’s Lahj Governorate.

According to an official bulletin issued by the center, the first tremor occurred at 9:23 p.m. on Sunday, registering a magnitude of 2.3 on the Richter scale. The second, stronger tremor struck at 5:20 a.m. on Monday with a magnitude of 2.8. Both tremors occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers and were classified as light to moderate seismic events, part of a recurring pattern observed in Lahj since early July.

The head of the center, Eng. Mohammed Hussein Mutahar Al-Houthi, previously attributed the seismic activity in Lahj to ongoing tectonic movements along the southern edge of the Arabian Plate near the Gulf of Aden structural system. He noted that the activity is concentrated at the intersection of natural fault lines forming “Dhalea” depression, which run northwest–southeast, and terminating fault lines running northeast–southwest.
