WASHINGTON, Aug. 18 (YPA) – The Israeli strikes on the Abu al-Duhur military airbase in southeastern Idlib province, Syria, early Tuesday were carried out after sensitive intelligence was shared with senior US officials, Fox News reported, citing an Israeli official.
The report came alongside a notable US reaction to the Israeli operation. Tom Barrack, the US special envoy to Syria, expressed “grave concern” over the strike on the Abu al-Duhur base, warning that the operation could lead to “unjustified escalation.”
Israeli aircraft carried out eight airstrikes on the Abu al-Duhur military airbase early Tuesday, targeting facilities inside the base and its runway. No casualties were reported.
The developments come as southern Syria faces continued escalation, with Israeli incursions persisting across parts of the Quneitra and Daraa countryside.
The incursions have included the establishment of temporary checkpoints, searches of civilians and vehicles, raids on homes, and the detention and questioning of Syrians, alongside earthmoving operations affecting agricultural land.
The strike on a military base in Idlib, which coincided with simultaneous US and Israeli statements, raises questions about the intelligence shared ahead of the operation and whether it signals a shift in Israel’s approach to Syria’s security landscape.
