Khan Younis water crisis worsens amid continued attacks on Gaza infrastructure

GAZA, Aug. 03 (YPA) – The Municipality of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip warned on Monday that the city’s water crisis is rapidly worsening due to a sharp decline in production and continued targeting of vital infrastructure by Israeli occupation forces.

Khan Younis is facing a severe water shortage and a significant drop in water production and distribution. Daily water output has fallen sharply, with each resident receiving no more than eight liters per day amid acute shortages of supplies and fuel.

The municipality said all 40 water wells in the city were taken out of service during the war, while some have since been partially restored with an operating capacity of no more than 40%.

It added that water production has dropped from 30,000 cubic meters per day to between 4,000 and 5,000 cubic meters, while available daily supplies do not exceed 15,000 cubic meters for around 600,000 residents.

The municipality noted that per capita water availability has fallen to no more than eight liters a day, leaving large areas of Khan Younis suffering from severe thirst due to shortages.

It also confirmed that 15 water sector workers have been killed while carrying out their duties, while supply networks continue to face repeated disruptions due to military operations, further worsening the city’s water crisis.
