New York Mayor calls for protests against Netanyahu during his visit to UN

NEW YORK, July 28 (YPA) – New York City Mayor Zahran Mamdani called on city residents to protest during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the United Nations General Assembly meetings, stressing that demonstrating is a cornerstone of the city’s democratic life.

 

This came after he backtracked on a previous statement that Netanyahu could be arrested, explaining that he “does not have the authority to do so” due to diplomatic immunity and federal laws.

 

Mamdani said at a press conference: “Those who feel frustrated or resist have the right to take to the streets and demonstrate.” He called on activists and human rights organizations to organize widespread peaceful protests to convey a message of rejection of the occupation’s violations against civilians, with the city committed to protecting the demonstrators.

 

This coincided with protests in front of the White House in Washington, where protesters chanted “war criminal” against Netanyahu during his meeting with Trump.
