Workers’ union to protest outside UN Offices in Aden
ADEN, July 19 (YPA) – The General Confederation of Workers’ Unions in Aden city in southern Yemen announced a major protest outside the offices of the United Nations and the UN Envoy in the Khormaksar district next Monday.
The demonstration aims to denounce economic collapse and deteriorating living conditions in regions under Saudi control.
The Union, which is aligned with the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC)—reportedly dissolved by Saudi Arabia—stated that the ongoing decline in living standards, unprecedented price hikes for basic commodities, collapsing public services like electricity and water, and delays in public sector salaries are entirely unacceptable.
According to its official statement, this peaceful escalation intends to defend citizens’ and workers’ rights to a dignified life.
The Union attributed the economic decline and price inflation to a “catastrophic decision” by the Saudi-backed government and the Presidential Leadership Council to raise customs tariffs, characterizing it as a systematic starvation policy targeting Aden and southern governorates.
Rejecting a recent wage increase approved by the Ministry of Finance as insufficient to meet the high cost of living, the Union held the Saudi-backed government fully responsible for the economic fallout. It called on all syndicates, civil society organizations, and citizens to participate in Monday’s protest.
This mobilization is part of an escalation strategy announced by the STC against what it describes as “Saudi occupation and guardianship” over Aden and other southern provinces controlled by Riyadh-aligned factions.
