7.3-magnitude earthquake strikes Mexico

MEXICO, July 17 (YPA) – A powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck southern Mexico on Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), prompting U.S. authorities to issue warnings about the potential for tsunami waves.

The U.S. Tsunami Warning System said the quake could generate tsunami waves along parts of the coastline and urged relevant authorities to monitor the situation closely and take necessary precautionary measures.

In the first official response, Mexico’s president said, according to Reuters, that there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties in the southern states of Chiapas and Tabasco, which were affected by the earthquake.

Mexican authorities are continuing to assess conditions on the ground and monitor for any potential impacts, while tsunami surveillance remains in effect.
