GAZA, July 16 (YPA) – The Palestinian movement Hamas on Thursday condemned an agreement signed in Washington between Israeli occupation’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and Colombia’s Foreign Minister-designate, Omar Paula Escobar, to fully restore diplomatic and economic relations and open a Colombian embassy in Quds (Jerusalem).
In a press statement, Hamas characterized the decision as a “dangerous and irresponsible step” and a reversal of the Colombian people’s historical support for the Palestinian cause.
The movement stated that the agreement grants Israel political leverage and violates international law and UN resolutions concerning Jerusalem. It called on the incoming Colombian administration to immediately rescind the decision.
The diplomatic breakthrough follows the election of right-wing President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella, who takes office on August 7. The move marks a major foreign policy shift from outgoing President Gustavo Petro, who severed ties with “Israel” in May 2024 over the military offensive in the Gaza Strip.
