Iran, Oman form joint committee on Strait of Hormuz navigation

MUSCAT, June 24 (YPA) – Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tariq, received on Tuesday Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi at Al Baraka Palace in Muscat on Tuesday, where the two sides reviewed developments in the ongoing U.S.-Iran negotiations.

According to the Oman News Agency, the Sultan was briefed on the various tracks of the negotiations and reiterated Oman’s support for the talks, expressing hope for their success and for a peaceful and lasting resolution of outstanding issues, including the restoration of safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, the nuclear file, and related matters.

In a joint statement, Iran and Oman stressed the need for all arrangements concerning the Strait of Hormuz to respect the sovereignty and sovereign rights of the two coastal states in accordance with international law.

Oman also renewed its support for the memorandum of understanding signed between the United States and Iran, emphasizing the importance of continued dialogue and coordination to ensure its successful implementation.

The two countries reaffirmed their commitment, as the coastal states bordering the Strait of Hormuz, to guaranteeing safe navigation through the waterway in line with international law, while preserving their sovereign rights over their territorial waters.

They agreed to continue discussions on the future management of navigation in the strait through a joint committee between their foreign ministries, and to consult with other coastal states and relevant parties in the region.

Both sides also reiterated their commitment to keeping the Strait of Hormuz a safe and open route for international shipping and to strengthening cooperation in support of maritime security, freedom of navigation, and regional stability.
