Gaza sea turns into stage for daily attacks on fishermen

GAZA, June 10 (YPA) – The sea off the Gaza Strip has become a daily battleground for Palestinian fishermen, with escalating Israeli naval attacks on fishing boats and their crews.

The head of the fishermen’s committees, Zakaria Bakr, reported that Israeli warships attacked several boats at sea and arrested nine fishermen in two separate incidents off Deir al-Balah and Gaza City, after chasing the boats and forcing them to stop.

He added that the attacks included heavy gunfire and continuous restrictions on the fishing sector, threatening the livelihoods of hundreds of families who depend on the sea amidst the difficult humanitarian conditions.

Bakr noted the loss of a small fishing boat at sea, suggesting it was blown up by warships, which increases the risks and losses for fishermen.

This escalation comes amidst the ongoing restrictions imposed by the occupation on fishermen in Gaza, at a time when human rights demands are mounting to halt these violations and guarantee freedom of fishing in accordance with international humanitarian law.
