ADEN, June 08 (YPA) – Angry demonstrations broke out on Monday in the southern Yemeni provinces of Aden and Hadramout, as residents protested worsening public services and extended electricity outages amid temperatures exceeding 40°C.
In the protest rallies, dozens of protesters blocked major roads in Aden and Mukalla with stones and burning tires, expressing frustration over power cuts that reportedly last more than 17 hours a day, further aggravating living conditions during the summer heat.
Participants blamed local authorities and Saudi-backed institutions for the worsening crisis, accusing them of failing to ensure adequate fuel supplies for electricity generation and basic services.
The protests came amid ongoing difficulties in securing fuel deliveries to power stations, including the PetroMasila power plant in Aden, contributing to the continued deterioration of the electricity network.
Residents said the prolonged outages had forced many families to spend nights outdoors to escape extreme indoor temperatures, while concerns grow over the health impacts of the heat, particularly on children, the elderly, and vulnerable groups.
Meanwhile, calls have intensified for broader demonstrations and sit-ins near the Maashiq Presidential Palace in Aden, where the Saudi-backed Aden government is based, as protesters demand urgent and lasting solutions to the electricity crisis.
