HAJJAH, June 08 (YPA) –The Agricultural Cooperative Union’s branch in Hajjah province, north of Yemen, declared on Monday the start of sales of locally produced Wadi Akhraf rice.
In a statement, the Union affirmed that the move aimed at supporting domestic agricultural production and reducing reliance on imported food products.
The crop was cultivated, harvested, and processed by the Maghrib Multi-Purpose Agricultural Cooperative, which produced almost 2.5 tons of rice during the current season. The locally grown rice is being sold at 650 Yemeni riyals per kilogram, equivalent to about $2.72.
The union urged consumers to support local agriculture by purchasing domestically produced goods, emphasizing that increased demand for national products provides direct support to farmers and encourages expansion in cultivation and production.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen agricultural value chains, promote self-sufficiency in key food commodities, and make greater use of local resources to boost economic resilience.
Agricultural cooperatives across several districts continue to organize farmers into specialized production groups focused on improving crop quality, increasing productivity, and ensuring the sustainability of agricultural value chains, contributing to long-term food security.
