WASHINGTON, May 24 (YPA) – The United States Secret Service declared that a gunman who opened fire on security personnel near the White House on Saturday evening local time has died from gunshot wounds sustained during the exchange of fire.
In a statement, the agency said a bystander was also struck during the incident, though no further details on their condition were provided.
According to the report, the attacker opened fire at a security checkpoint near the White House, prompting Secret Service agents to return fire and strike the gunman, who was later transported to a nearby hospital where he died.
The agency confirmed that U.S. President Donald Trump was present at the White House at the time, stressing that he and other protected individuals were not affected by the incident.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation said its teams were deployed to the scene to assist in the investigation of the shooting near the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW.
Media outlets reported that security protocols were immediately activated, including evacuation of the White House north grounds following reports of gunfire.
