DAMASCUS, May 24 (YPA) – The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported growing tension and outrage within legal circles in Hama following the detention of several female lawyers inside the city’s Justice Palace, in an incident that has drawn widespread criticism and warnings over an alleged erosion of judicial authority and institutional integrity.
According to the SOHR, the incident began with the detention of lawyer Faten Daaboul inside the Justice Palace cafe by a civilian individual known as “Abu al-Shaymaa,” while she was filmed during the arrest in what activists and lawyers described as a humiliating scene.
SOHR added that Daaboul was later transferred to the Judicial Inspection Department, where three other female lawyers — Dawla Ibrahim, Reem Issa, and Maryam Ibrahim — were also detained alongside her.
The incident has raised growing concerns that some judicial facilities are being transformed into centers of influence operating outside established legal frameworks and procedures, a development that could threaten judicial independence and erode public confidence in the justice system.
Activists and lawyers have called for a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the events inside the Justice Palace, as well as accountability for any violations affecting the dignity of lawyers or deviating from established legal standards and procedures
