Sanaa demands int’l action to neutralize telecom sector, lift ban on equipment

SANAA, May 17 (YPA) – The Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology in Sanaa urged the international community, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and UN and human rights organizations to intervene urgently to pressure for the neutralization of Yemen’s telecom sector, protect its facilities and infrastructure, and keep it entirely insulated from political conflicts.

In a statement issued on Sunday marking the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, the Ministry emphasized that the sector has suffered extensive damage and significant structural destruction over more than 11 years due to airstrikes and the ongoing blockade, which continues to prevent the entry of civilian telecommunication equipment.

Despite ongoing challenges, the Ministry continues to upgrade services, expand fourth-generation (4G) networks, and enhance connectivity and cloud computing services to ensure service continuity for citizens across various regions.

The statement renewed calls to facilitate the repair of submarine cables, operate the “SMW5” submarine cable branch in Hodeida, and lift the restrictions on equipment to bridge the digital divide and secure safe connectivity with the world.
