ISTANBUL, May 14 (YPA) – Turkish authorities have escalated legal action against journalist Ismail Ari after prosecutors filed multiple charges linked to his reporting and public comments on figures close to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and allegations involving state institutions.
According to Turkish media reports, prosecutors are seeking up to six years in prison for “spreading misleading information” and “violating confidentiality.”
The charges stem from Arı’s news reports and social media commentary. Arı was detained during a house raid on Mar 21 and remains in pretrial detention.
Prosecutors also included Arı’s posts concerning a dorm construction project at the İstanbul İmam Hatip High School in Fatih where President Erdoğan graduated. Arı had reported that the dormitory construction had begun on Treasury land that included registered cultural assets.
Moreover, the charges stem from comments Ari made during a television interview in which he alleged that members of Erdoğan’s family were connected to the management of nearly 20 organizations and raised claims regarding the transfer of public funds to those entities.
A court in Ankara has formally accepted the indictment and scheduled the first hearing for June 5. Ari has remained in pretrial detention since his arrest in March.
The continued detention of Ari has sparked criticism from press freedom organizations and opposition politicians, who say the case reflects escalating pressure on journalists and opposition media outlets in Turkey, particularly in cases involving corruption allegations or criticism of ruling authorities.
