Washington holds talks with Denmark over new military bases in Greenland

WASHINGTON, May 13 (YPA) – The United States is reportedly holding diplomatic talks with Denmark regarding plans to expand its military presence in Greenland by establishing new bases on the strategically important Arctic island, the BBC reported, citing US officials.

According to officials, Washington has made progress in recent months in negotiations aimed at increasing its military footprint in Greenland amid growing geopolitical competition in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions.

The US administration is said to be evaluating the establishment of three new military facilities in southern Greenland, a move viewed by analysts as part of broader efforts to strengthen American influence in the Arctic following rising tensions involving Russia and China.

The United States is reportedly interested in building three new bases in the southern part of the island, a Danish sovereign territory, amid efforts to ease the diplomatic tensions that followed earlier remarks by US President Donald Trump regarding the annexation of Greenland.

The White House confirmed to the BBC that talks with Denmark regarding Greenland are underway, but declined to comment on their content.

A senior White House official said the Trump administration remains optimistic and believes the discussions are moving “in the right direction.”

The United States currently operates one military base in Greenland — Pituffik Space Base, located in the island’s northwest.
