ADEN, May 09 (YPA) – Yemeni activist Omar Mohammed Al-Daya has uncovered shocking figures regarding the scale of illegal levies and extortions imposed by Saudi-backed forces’ military checkpoints on cargo trucks traveling the vital route between Aden and Marib.
According to documentation shared by Al-Daya, the total amount forcibly collected from a single truck during its journey can reach approximately one million Yemeni Rials.
The activist detailed a systematic pattern of extortion that begins within Aden and escalates dramatically across various provinces. Specifically, checkpoints in Abyan extract roughly 300,000 YR across eight different stops, while the burden increases further in Shabwa, where fees reach 450,000 YR—two-thirds of which are collected under the guise of “Road Maintenance Funds.” The cycle of levies concludes in the Marib sector with an additional 139,000 YR in fees.
Al-Daya, who supported his claims with 14 official payment vouchers, warned that these predatory practices are directly driving up the cost of essential goods.
He emphasized that such financial burdens ultimately fall on the shoulders of the Yemeni people, further exacerbating the country’s already dire humanitarian and living conditions.
