MOGADISHU, April. 16 (YPA) – The Federal Republic of Somalia on Thursday strongly condemned Israel’s appointment of an ambassador to the breakaway region of Somaliland, calling the move a “violation” of its sovereignty and a “breach” of international law, and asserting that the region is an integral part of the country.
In a statement, the Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the appointment “represents a direct violation of Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity and is contrary to international law, the UN Charter, and the fundamental principles of the African Union,” reiterating its rejection of any attempt to grant diplomatic or political recognition to any part of its territory outside the authority of the Federal Government in Mogadishu.
Mogadishu considered the Israeli move to be “risking destabilizing regional progress and encouraging divisive narratives,” calling on Israel to reconsider the decision and respect Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
It also urged international bodies to uphold international law and reject any actions that undermine Somalia’s unity or legitimize separatist claims.
On Wednesday, Israel appointed Michael Lotem as its first ambassador to Somaliland, following its December 2015 declaration of recognition of the region’s independence, a move rejected by the Somali government and criticized by several countries.
