Pope Leo XIV: Protecting Lebanese civilians is a “moral and international duty”

VATICAN, April 12 (YPA) – Pope Leo XIV expressed his full solidarity with the Lebanese people this Sunday, emphasizing that protecting civilians from the “horrific effects of war” is a moral duty dictated by both human conscience and international law.

During his sermon in St. Peter’s Square, the Pope called for prioritizing diplomatic solutions and de-escalation amid current tensions, reaffirming his categorical rejection of wars, stating that “God does not bless any conflict.”

These remarks come as Southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley face ongoing Israeli attacks, amid criticism of involved parties for evading ceasefire commitments.

“True peace is not achieved through military action, but through patience, fostering coexistence, and dialogue between nations,” said Pope Leo XIV.
