MADRID, Feb. 24 (YPA) – Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares called for a firmer European stance in light of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and continued settlement expansion in the West Bank.
Speaking to the press, Albares said Spain continues to coordinate with the EU mission in Rafah to ensure humanitarian aid reaches the Gaza Strip, describing the situation in the Middle East as “deeply concerning.”
He criticized the EU’s silence on Israeli violations in the West Bank and the forced displacement of Palestinians.
“There is still ongoing killing in Gaza, and aid remains stuck at the crossings,” he added.
Spain has previously rejected joining the so-called “Peace Council” launched by US President Donald Trump, a move that drew criticism for allegedly undermining the United Nations’ role.
Albares added that the European Union possesses the necessary tools to exert pressure on the Israeli government and called for their effective use to address the deteriorating humanitarian situation and ongoing settlement expansion.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, speaking after the EU summit in Brussels, said Spain values the initiative but refuses to join the council.
He emphasized the decision is driven by the need for consistency with a multilateral approach, the UN system, and international law, noting that the council does not include the Palestinian Authority.
