ANDORRA LA VELLA, Feb. 17 (YPA) – A state of anger has risen in Andorra’s small Jewish community after a traditional carnival in Ancamp area saw an effigy representing “Israel” subjected to a symbolic trial, shot, and burned in front of the public.
The effigy was painted in the colors of the Israeli flag and bore a Star of David on its face.
Esther Vogel, one of the 160 Jews living in Andorra, said the event marked the first clear appearance of “anti-Semitic” features at the traditional carnival: “The carnival takes place every year, and people laugh at different things, but this time an effigy painted in the colors of the Israeli flag was used and hung up, tried, sentenced to death, and then the sentence was carried out by shooting and burning it.”
During the carnival, the trial stage was set up with an effigy of “Karnstolts” (the king’s effigy), where a symbolic trial was held, a death sentence was pronounced, and the effigy was burned several days later.
This time, the effigy was adorned with a Star of David and the colors of the Israeli flag, and an air pistol was pointed at it in front of the assembled crowd, further inflaming anger within the Jewish community.
