Palestinian coach dies after hours-long Israeli detention near Tulkarm

QUDS, Oct. 04 (YPA) – A Palestinian taekwondo coach died on Sunday after being detained for several hours by Israeli occupation soldiers near the Anabta military checkpoint east of Tulkarm in the northern occupied West Bank.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said in a statement that its crews attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Raafat Khairi Ahmed Abu Khalil, 41, but he died and was subsequently taken to hospital.

The Red Crescent did not provide details on the cause or circumstances of Abu Khalil’s death.

According to local sources, Abu Khalil, a resident of At-Til, north of Tulkarm, had been detained for several hours near the Israeli military checkpoint in Anabta.

The sources added that Abu Khalil was a Palestinian taekwondo coach who had previously headed the Palestinian national taekwondo teams committee and served as director of the Al-Fahd Sports Center in Ramallah, in the central occupied West Bank.

The Palestinian Taekwondo Federation mourned Abu Khalil in a statement, describing him as a coach and member of its technical committee and extending condolences to his family, relatives and the Palestinian sporting community.

The incident came amid tightened restrictions imposed by the Israeli military on Palestinian movement in the occupied West Bank, including the closure of checkpoints and gates and the installation of additional barriers, disrupting movement across the territory.
