One million Israeli settlers live under threat of poverty

SANAA, Jan. 31 YPA) – Nearly one million people were living below the poverty line in 2024, including approximately 880,000 children, amid a sharp deterioration in living conditions across the occupied Palestinian territories.

An Israeli report released on Friday by the so-called “Insurance Institution,” these figures account for around 20% of the total population, with children making up 28% of those affected. The report noted that poverty levels have worsened significantly since the launch of the “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation on October 7.

The report indicated that Israel ranks among the worst globally in terms of child poverty, placing first among member states of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), surpassed only by Costa Rica.

The data highlighted stark geographical disparities, with poverty rates declining to approximately 14–15% in occupied Jaffa, known as Tel Aviv, and the central region, while rising to between 21–22% in the northern and southern areas of the occupied Palestinian territories.

In occupied city of Al Quds, the situation was described as particularly severe, with the poverty rate reaching 36.5%. The settlement of Modi’in Illit was identified as one of the poorest areas, where nearly half of the population—around 50%—lives below the poverty line.
