European rejection of Trump’s “Peace Council” is expected, along with controversial invitations for membership
BRUSSELS, Jan. 19 (YPA) – Western diplomats anticipate that U.S. President Donald Trump’s call to establish a so-called “Peace Council” will face a definitive European rejection.
Signs indicate that EU member states will abstain from joining the council, which is being viewed as a direct undermining of the United Nations and a violation of diplomatic “red lines.”
Controversial Invitations and Unprecedented Structure
Trump’s invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin—who is subject to an international arrest warrant—and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has sparked a wave of diplomatic backlash.
Furthermore, the draft charter of the council includes the extraordinary condition of Trump serving as chairman for life. It also introduces unprecedented clauses granting “permanent membership” in exchange for financial funding reaching $1 billion.
Fears of Fragmenting the European Position
Sources told Hebrew “Haaretz” newspaper that EU ambassadors have held emergency deliberations to counter the initiative. The council is perceived as an American attempt to empower far-right movements and dismantle the unified European stance.
Operational Agenda
The council is slated to begin its operations by tackling the Gaza file. However, observers argue that the initiative reflects Trump’s desire to reshape the international order through a “transactional-political” lens that bypasses traditional structures of justice and international law.
